London Olympics Badminton: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in Action Today



The Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will be playing their last group game on Tuesday at the London Olympics Women's Doubles Badminton tournament.

Gutta and Ponnappa will be going against Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao of Singapore in a Group B match. Gutta and Ponnappa have got 1 win and 1 loss under their belt.

It is a must win game for Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa and their last opportunity to Qualify for the next round.

The match will begin at 17.30 GMT (23.00 IST).

India vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI: India Win The Series | Kohli Hits Ton




India beat Sri Lanka in the 4th ODI by 6 wickets to take a 3-1 lead in the series. With just 1 game to go, India have now sealed the series. This is their 3rd consecutive ODI Series win in Sri Lanka in the past 4 years.

Virat Kohli and Manoj Tiwary were the stars as far as India are concerned. Manoj Tiwary was surprisingly the pick of the bowlers a he bagged 4 crucial wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 251/8. Later Virat Kohli scored his 13th ODI ton to take India home. Kohli remained not out on 128 in 119 balls.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first. Dilshan(42) and Tharanga(51) got India off to an excellent start and added 91 for the first wicket. But after the spinners were introduced, it really put a lid on the scoring and no batsman could score quickly. Manoj Tiwary, Sehwag and Ashwin did not allow Sri Lanka to get away with the game. Sri Lanka finally ended on 251/8 in 50 overs.

India got off to the worst start possible as Gambhir was bowled by Malinga in the very first over on 0. Kohli and Sehwag added 52 for the 2nd wicket before Sehwag was dismissed by Mathews. Rohit sharma and Manoj Tiwary too did not last long and India were reduced to 109/4. India were looking in trouble.

But Kohli and Raina played some attacking shots in the batting powerplay and scored 55 runs in that period of 5 overs. Kohli and Raina shared an unbveaten stand of 146 runs in just 112 balls. Kohli hit his second 100 of the series, while Raina hit his 3rd 50 of the series. India got to the target with 7.4 overs to spare. The last ODI will be played at Pallekele on Saturday.

London Olympics Badminton: P.Kashyap Enters Pre Quarter Finals

Indian badminton star P.Kashyap moved into the Pre Quarter Finals of the London Olympics Badminton tournament as he defeated Tien Minh Nguyen in straight sets.

P.Kashyap won the match 21-9, 21-14 in about 40 minutes to top Group D. Kashyap will now face Sri Lankan Niluka Karunaratne in the Pre Quarter Finals.

The hopes are now rising from this youngster and he will certainly look to carry on the momentum. It is and outside chance that he might grab a medal at the London Games.

London Olympics Judo: Garima Chaudhary Eliminated in Round 1


Garima Chaudhary, India's lone Judoka at the London Olympics, has been knocked out in the 63 kg category elimination round.

Garima Chaudhary was beaten in just 1.21 minutes by an Ippon by Yoshie Ueno of Japan. This ends India's challenge in Judo at the London Olympics.

Japan had earlier won a Gold Medal in Judo yesterday. They have also won two silvers and a bronze in Judo.

India vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI : India Aim For Series Victory



Latest Update- Sri Lanka Win Toss, Elect To Bat First.

India vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI will be played today at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India are leading the 5 ODI Series 2-1 and have a golden opportunity of sealing the series by win under their belt today.

The latest news is that Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka has won the toss and decided to bat first. Sri Lanka have made two changes in their side. Kumar Sangakkara is out of the series due to a hairline fracture. So, Lahiru Thirimanne replaces him in the Playing XI. The other change is that Nuwan Pradeep is included in the team in place of Isuru Udana.

Sri Lanka are in Do-Or-Die position and need to win today to stay alive in the series. Sangakkara was their in-form man and he will certainly be missed. Dilshan and Jayawardene will have to lead the charge in Sangakkara's absence.

India have made one change in their side. Manoj Tiwary finally gets a game and it is Rahul Sharma who is left out. MS Dhoni has still pursued with Rohit Sharma in the team even after his scores of 5, 0 and 0 in the series so far.

India are in the driver's seat as far as the series is concerned. They chased well in the last game and will look to repeat the performance from the last game.

Gagan Narang became the first Indian in the Olympics 2012 to claim a medal , and signs are postive that there are more to follow , Saina Nehwal another Medal hopeful clean swiped her rival Lianne Tan yesterday with sets of 21-4 & 21-14 , However the Men's Hockey team had to taste defeat at the hands of the Netherlands as they went down 3-2 after giving a tough fight in the second half . Indian Tennis start Leander Paes kept hopes alive tagging up with Vishnu Vardhan in the Men's Doubles Event defeating Dutch pair .  In another game yesterday Bhupati & Boppana also made it into the round of 16 .

London Olympics Tennis: Bhupathi and Bopanna Through To Next Round

Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna were off to an excellent start in the London Olympics Men's Doubles tournament as they won a close match to qualify for the Pre Quarter Finals.

Bhupathi and Bopanna beat Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury 7-6, 6-7, 8-6 in a match which last for 2 and a half hours. Bhupathi and Bopanna were stretched to the limits by Mirnyi and Bury and the Indian pair had to display every skill of theirs to win the match.

All the three sets went down to the wire, but eventually Bhupathi and Bopanna ended on the winning side. Bhupathi and Bopanna will now play the French pair of Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet in the Pre Quarters on Tuesday.

London Olympics Tennis: Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan Win Opening Match


Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan began their campaign in the London Olympics Men's Doubles Tennis tournament on a winning note as they defeated the Dutch pair of Jean Julien Rojer and Robin Haase 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 to win  their first game on Monday.

The World No.208 pair of Paes and Vardhan did well to win the first set 7-6. But they lost the momentum in the Second set and were outplayed as they lost it 4-6.

But the Indian pair of Paes and Vardhan came back well in the Third set and did not allow the Netherlands pair to dictate terms. They won the third set easily by 6-2 and qualified for the next round.

Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan will now play Jo Wifred Tsonga and Michael Llodra in the next round on Tuesday.

London Olympics Badminton: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa Win A Thriller

The Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa stunned the World No.10 Chinese pair of Yu Chin Chien and Wen Hsing Cheng 25-23,16-21, 21-18 to win their Group B match in the London Olympics.

Gutta and Ponnappa had earlier lost their first game in straight sets and it was a must win  game for them. The Indian duo played out of their skins to clinch a thriller on Monday.

The first set was a really close one as it went into the tie breakers. Gutta and Ponnappa kept their nerves and finally won the set 25-23.

The Chinese pair came back strongly in the next set to win it comfortably 21-16. Gutta and Ponnappa played some faulty strokes to allow their opponents to come back in the match.

The Third set once again proved to be close. Though India were leading 11-9 at the break, the Chinese duo came back well to bring the score down to 19-18 in favour of India. The match could have gone either way at this stage, but Gutta and Ponnappa did not commit further mistakes and won the set 21-18.

Gutta and Ponnappa will now play the World No.13 pair of Singapore, Shinta Mulis Sari and Lei Yao, on Tuesday in their last group game which is a must win for them.

London 2012 Archery: Laishram Bombayla Devi Knocked Out in Pre Quarter Finals





Indian archer Laishram Bombayla Devi was eliminated from the London Olympics Archery Individual event after she lost in the Round of 16.

Bombayla Devi had earlier won her match in the Round of 32 by 6 sets to 4. But she could not keep up the momentum in the Pre Quarter Finals and lost badly.

After Bombayla Devi's exit, Deepika Kumari and C.Swuro are the only two Indian women archers left to compete in the Individual event. India had earlier been knocked out in the Archery Women's Team Event as well.

London Olympics 2012 Boxing: Sumit Sangwan Loses A Controversial Bout

Indian boxer Sumit Sangwan was eliminated from the Men's 81 kg Boxing tournament at the London Olympics in the Round of 32 after he lost a controversial match against Brazilian Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino 14-15.

Sumit Sangwan played well in Round 1 and was clearly leading, but to everyone's surprise the judges declared that Florentino was leading 5-4 after Round 1.

Sumit Sangwan was attacking his opponent in Round 2 as well and played far better than his rival. But still the result was declared in favour of the Brazilian 5-4.

Sumit Sangwan was trailing by 2 points at the start of Round 3. He finally got the lead in Round 3 and secured 6 points against 5 by his opponent. But Sangwan eventually lost the match 14-15.

India has officially lodged a complaint with the organisers of London Olympics as Sumit Sangwan should have certainly won the match. Even the commentators were surprised by the verdict and called it a "daylight robbery".

London 2012 : Saina Nehwal Advances after defeating Lianne Tan


Saina Nehwal utilizes her calm and composed technique  to  overpower Belgium's Lianne Tan in Women's Singles Badminton Event and claim an easy win , to proceed to the next round of the event due to be held on . Saina Manages to top Group E standings after overpowering all her opponents in the last two games . 

Saina now gurantess herself a spot in the Round of 16 .  Nehwal , is India's one of the brightest hopes in the Olympics to earn a medal in the Women's Singles Badminton event.

 Saina cleanswipped her opponent with sets of 21-4 and 21-14 to end the game as a contest and advance to the final Round of 16 .

The Event will continue till August 5 where the Gold Medal match will be played on the very last day.The Group Event will continue till 31st July.

London Olympics Hockey: India Lose To Netherlands 2-3


Indian Men's Hockey Team are off to a poor start in the London Olympics after losing to Netherlands 2-3 in the opener here on Monday.

Netherlands outplayed the Indians throughout the match and did not allow India to take the lead. Netherlands began well, scoring 2 goals in the 1st half. The 1st half ended with the score reading 2-0 in favour of Netherlands.

India came back well in the 2nd half and scored 2 goals in a span of 4 minutes. Dharamvir got India off the mark by scoring a goal in the 45th minute. 3 minutes later, Shivendra Singh scored the equalizer for India. The score was now 2-2.

It seemed that India might comeback to win the match. But Netherlands once again took the lead and maintained it right to the end. Netherlands finally won the match 3-2.

Indian  Men's Hockey team will be beginning their campaign in the London Olympics on Monday when they take on Netherlands in a group game.

Indian Hockey Team are participating in the Olympics after 8 long years after they failed to Qualify for Beijing Olympics 2008. They will certainly look to prove themselves in this game.

Indian Captain Bharat Chetri is confident of a good performance against the Dutch men. India are in a tough group and will really have to play well to get through to the next round.

London 2012 Olympics : Gagan Narang win Bronze | India's 1st Medal


Narang wins Bronze in the Men's 10m Air Rifle Shootings Event held at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London  , standing third after Niccollo Campriani of Italy and Champion Alin Geroge of Romania who finished first staying at the second spot for most of the duration during the Finals . India were very hopeful as Narang also clinched a Gold during the Commonwealth Games 2010. Narang became the first Indian contingent at the Olympics 2012 to clinch a Medal which  is surely going to motivate the rest of the contingents in the Indian camp. 

Abhinav Bindra however missed out on the opportunity to qualify for the finals of the event after standing 16th in the leaderboards during the qualifications .

London Olympics Shooting: Gagang Narang Wins Bronze



Gagan Narang brought India its first medal at the London Olympics after finishing 3rd in the Men's 10m Air Rifle Finals. Gagan Narang won a Bronze Medal after ending up with a score of 701.1

Gagan Narang had earlier finished 3rd in the Qualifiers. Gagan Narang has now won his first Medal in his 3rd Olympics.

There were huge expectations from him and he did exceedingly well. Gagan Narang has surely done India proud by winning a Bronze Medal, India's first at London Olympics.

Gagan Narang missed the Silver Medal by just 0.4 points and the Gold Medal by 1 point.

London Olympics 2012 : Gagan Narang In , Abhinav Bindra Out of the Finals of Shootings

 In a Surprising turn of events in the Men's 10m Air Rifle Finals , underway at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London  . It is Gagan Narang who will representing the Tri-Color in the Finals schduled to begin in some hours from now , Narang who acquired a gold in the commonwealth Games 2012 , now keeps India's hopes alive in the Men's Shooting event . But a major disappointment for the Indian fans back home and in London is that , Beijing Gold Medalist Abhinav Bindra edged out of the event after securing 16th place in the leaderboards , Bindra stood 13 places behind fellow countryman Narang , who managed to claim the 3rd spot with 598 points .

London Olympics Shooting: Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang | 1.30 PM IST


The two Indian ace shooters Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang will be starting their campaign at the London Olympics on Monday in the 10m Air Rifle Qualifying Rounds from 1.30 pm IST. 

Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra are big medal hopefuls as far as India is concerned. They are expected to clear the Qualifiers with ease.
The finals of the 10m Air Rifles will also be held today from 4.45 pm IST. It is a sheer possibility that India might win its first medal at the London Games today.

Bindra won a Gold Medal at the Beijing Olympics and hopes are high that he will once do India proud. Gagan Narang is in prime form and he too is a strong contender for a medal.

London 2012 Boxing :Sumit Sangwan vs Falco | 30th July Live Time

Florentino Falco Wins the Bout

 In the fourth bout of the Olympics 2012 including an Indian contingent ,  in the round of 32 , it will be Boxer Sumit Sangwan (19) confronting the Brazilian Florentino Falco (24) . This fight in the 81 Kg Light Heavyweight Category is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm IST , however there might be delays due to other ongoing events .

 Sumit Sangwan will look to capitalize his chances following successful opening bouts from fellow Boxers Vijender Singh( 75 Kg )  and Jai Bhagwan (60 Kg)  , however the young Shiva Thapa was the only one who missed out on an victory after giving a tough competition to an experienced Brazilian counterpart Oscar Fierro . 

Though , Thapa managed to hold on in the first two rounds of the game but eventually his inexperience gave way to his defeat in the final round of the bout . Indian Boxing Coach & Mentor Sandhu ,  however has no cause of worry or regret , as according to him all  of India's Boxing contingents  stores potential of claiming a medal .

The First Rounds of the 81 kg Category will start from today , 30th July onwards as the 19 year old Sangwan aims to go through to the next round .

London 2012 Badminton: Saina Nehwal Wins An Easy Battle



Indian Badminton sensation Saina Nehwal made an impressive start to her campaign in the London Olympics by beating her Swiss opponent Sabrina Jacquet 21-9,21-4 in straight sets.

The 22 year old World No.5 proved to be too good for her 65th rank Swiss opponent. She dominated the match right throughout and did not allow her opponent to get a sniff of victory.

Saina Nehwal will be taking on Lianne Tan of Belgium on Monday and needs to top her group to qualify for the next round.

Yesterday was a satisfying day for the Indian Contingents at the Olympics , as Boxer Jai Bhagwan , Badminton prodigy Saina Nehwal and Rower Sarwarn Singh all successfully entered the next stages of the their respective events . India's hope for a gold medal relies  a lot on Nehwal , and justifying a billion prayers,  yesterday night she seemed quite confident as she swipped her counterpart Sabrina Jacquet . West Indies cruised to a comfortable 9 wicket win in the 1st Test Match against New Zealand. West Indies now lead the 3 Test Series 1-0. London Olympics Boxing: Jai Bhagwan Punches His Way Into The Pre-Quarters


Indian boxer Jai Bhagwan stormed into the Pre-QuareterFinals of the Lightweight(60 kg) category in the London Olympics Boxing tournament.

The 26 year old Indian boxer was making his debut in the Olympics and he completely dominated the game. Jai Bhagwan beat Andrique Allisop of Seychelles 18-8.

Bhagwan made a good start in Round 1 and was attacking right from the word go. He managed to salvage 7 points in Round 1 against 3 by his rival.

The story was the same in Round 2 as well with Bhagwan extending his lead to 8 points. At the end of Round 2 the score was 14-6 in favour of Bhagwan.

Bhagwan then played cautiously in Round 3 and ended up winning the match 18-8. He will now play Gani Zhailauov of Kazakhstan in the Pre Quarter Final.

The 8th rank Danish pair of Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl dominated the Indian pair of Gutta and Diju right throughout the match and beat the Indian pair 12-21,16-21 in just about half an hour's time.

The Danish pair opened up with a 6-3 lead with the Indian pair playing some false shots. The Danish pair later extended the lead to 12-4. Indians tried to catch up but the lead was too big for them. They lost the set 12-21.


Gutta and Diju began poorly in the second set as well, handing a 5-0 lead to Laybourn and Juhl. Gutta and Diju did well to level at 7-7, but the Denmark duo then ran away with the game to win the set 16-21.

Jwala Gutta and V.Diju will now take on the Korean pair of Yong Dae Lee and Jung Eun Ha in their last group game on Tuesday.

London Olympics Rowing: Swarn Singh Enters Quarter Finals


Indian rower Swarn Singh Virk entered the Quarter Finals in the Single Sculls event of the London Olympics after winning the repechage round on Sunday. He faced a tough challenge from his South Korean rival but he eventually got past the finishing line.

Swarn Singh had finished fourth in the heats on Saturday and so had to compete in the repechage round on Sunday.  He took 7:00.49 to complete the 2 km distance. The 23 year old will be competing in the Quarter Finals which will be held on Tuesday.

Swarn Singh was leading the five-rower race right from the start and only the South Korean Kim gave him some challenge. The others were left behind a long way. Swarn Singh finally ended up winning the race by a lead of one-and-a-half boat. Kim has also qualified for the Quarter Finals.

London Olympics Archery: Indian Women Archers Crash Out In 1st Round


Indian Women Archery team crashed out of the London Olympic Games after losing to Denmark by just 1 point. The scoreline read 211-210 in favour of the Denmark team at the end of the match. There were huge expectations from Deepika Kumari, C.Swuro and Bombayla Devi, but they missed the mark by a whisker.

India were leading by 1 point at the end of Round 1, but a couple of poor aims by Swuro resulted in India losing the momentum. Denmark lead by 107-104 at the end of Round 2.

The 3rd Round was also dominated by Denmark as they finished it with a lead of 5 points. India fought hard in the 4th and final round to come back in the match. But the Denmark archers squeezed past by 1 point.

It was a disappointing performance by the Indian women archers because there were big hopes from them after the Men's team was knocked out yesterday.
