MI vs KXIP: Mumbai pull off a thriller

The Mumbai Indians side could not have provided Sachin Tendulkar with a better gift a day after his 39th birthday. Mumbai Indians snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and handed a 4 wicket loss to the Kings XI Punjab. Kings XI Punjab were batting first at Mohali and the two young Punjab openers Saini and Mandeep gave a pretty good start to the innings. The two put 35 on the board in 5 overs and provided a good platform to the middle order. Mandeep was the first to go on 22 and Saini followed him quickly. Marsh and Hussey were at the crease and there were big expectations from them  Marsh began slowly but just when he tried to up the tempo he was shown the way to the pavilion. Marsh scored 17 in 26 balls.  David Miller joined Hussey and they began to gather runs at a good pace. Hussey unleashed himself in the last 5 overs and was well supported by Miller as Punjab notched up 68 runs in the last 5 overs and finished on 168/3 in 20 overs. Hussey remained unbeaten on 68 in 40 balls and Miller was 34 not out. Punjab surely had the momentum going into the second innings.

Mumbai had to bat well to get to the target and the responsibility was on the shoulders of Franklin and Tendulkar to give the visitors a good start. Franklin and Tendulkar did just that and played cautiously in the first 6 overs. Azhar Mahmood was given the ball and he provided the much needed break through by dismissing Franklin caught behind the wicket for 22 . He struck again a ball after the strategic time out and this time it was the big man Tendulkar who edged the ball into the keeper's gloves. Tendulkar was out for 34 of 29 balls. Dinesh Kathik and the big fellow Pollard too did not last long as both were dismissed for 3. Mumbai Indians were looking in a spot of bother and Rohit Sharma and Rayudu had to see them home. Rohit played some fantastic shots and it was looking that he would guide Mumbai to victory. But that was not the case as he was out jut after completing his 50. With 32 needed of the last 2 overs, the odds were stacked against the Mumbai Indians. But a blitzkrieg from Robin Peterson ensured that they collected 27 of the penultimate over of Piyush Chawla. Chawla was hit for 2 fours and 3 sixes in that over.Mumbai needed 5 of the last over and it proved to be cakewalk in the end. Rayudu remained 34 not out of 17 balls and Peterson on 16 not out in 7 balls.
