London Olympics Badminton: Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa Win A Thriller

The Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa stunned the World No.10 Chinese pair of Yu Chin Chien and Wen Hsing Cheng 25-23,16-21, 21-18 to win their Group B match in the London Olympics.

Gutta and Ponnappa had earlier lost their first game in straight sets and it was a must win  game for them. The Indian duo played out of their skins to clinch a thriller on Monday.

The first set was a really close one as it went into the tie breakers. Gutta and Ponnappa kept their nerves and finally won the set 25-23.

The Chinese pair came back strongly in the next set to win it comfortably 21-16. Gutta and Ponnappa played some faulty strokes to allow their opponents to come back in the match.

The Third set once again proved to be close. Though India were leading 11-9 at the break, the Chinese duo came back well to bring the score down to 19-18 in favour of India. The match could have gone either way at this stage, but Gutta and Ponnappa did not commit further mistakes and won the set 21-18.

Gutta and Ponnappa will now play the World No.13 pair of Singapore, Shinta Mulis Sari and Lei Yao, on Tuesday in their last group game which is a must win for them.
