South Africa Beat England By An Innings & 12 Runs In 1st Test

South Africa beat England in the 1st of the 3 Test Series at The Oval on Monday and moved one step closer to the No.1 Ranking in Test Cricket. South Africa won the match comfortably by an innings and 12 runs. England could manage only 240 runs in reply to South Africa's 1st innings lead of 252. Hashim Amla was adjudged the Man of the Match for his innings of 311 not out off 529 balls in the 1st innings.

England had won the toss and decided to bat first. England lost their Skipper early but Cook and Trott carried on. Cook and Trott added 170 for the 2nd wicket. Trott was dismissed on 71. Pietersen was off to a quick start but his innings was cut short by Kallis. Cook went on to score a 100 and was finally out for 115. England lost a few quick wickets on the morning of Day 2 and were looking in some trouble. But Matt Prior got some runs with the tail and got England past 350. England was bowled out for 385 with Prior scoring 60. Morne Morkel was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa as he picked up 4/72.

South Africa too were off to a poor start as they lost Alviro Petersen for a duck. Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla got together and put on 259 for the 2nd wicket. Graeme Smith scored 131, but was unlucky to be bowled by Bresnan as the ball ricochet onto the stumps of his bat and pad. Hashim Amla created history on Day 4 as he became the 1st South Africa batsman to score a triple 100 in Test Cricket. He remained unbeaten on 311. Jacques Kallis too registered his 43rd Century as he ended 182 not out. Amla and Kallis put on a record partnership of 377* runs for the 3rd wicket. South Africa declared their innings on 637/2, taking a lead of 252 runs in the 1st innings.

England had their work cut out. England lost 4 early wickets to reach 67/4 at one stage. Bell and Bopara tried to stabilise the innings with a half century partnership. Once again Prior had a big task to do. Prior added 86 for the 6th wicket with Bell. But after Prior was dismissed for 40 and Bell for 55, Steyn ran though the batting order and England was all out for 240. Steyn ended up picking 5 wickets for 56 runs. South Africa won the match by an innings and 12 runs. South Africa now have a 1-0 lead in the 3 Test Series and need to win just 1 more game to become No. 1 in Test Rankings.
