The 5th ODI between West Indies and New Zealand once again proved to be the Sunil Narine show as the "Mystery Spinner" Sunil Narine grabbed 5 crucial wickets for just 27 runs. West Indies won the match by 20 runs and also won the series 4-1. Sunil Narine was adjudged both the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series.
West Indies had won the toss and decided to bat first. Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles once again failed with the bat and so did Dwayne Smith. Bravo and Samuels tried to stabilise the innings with some cautious batting. Samuels was driving the ball in superb fashion and looking good on 43 when he was undone by a lower delivery from Southee. Pollard too did not last long as he chipped one to short mid-wicket off the bowling of Williamson.
West Indies were struggling at 104/5 in the 27th over when Thomas joined Bravo. Both added 53 vital runs for the 6th wicket. In the meanwhile Bravo reached his 50 too. Once again, it was Andre Russell who did all the damage as he struck an unbeaten 59 in just 40 balls which included 6 fours and 3 sixes. West Indies finally finished on 241/9 in 50 overs.
New Zealand chase got off to the worst possible start as they lost Nicol in the first over. McCullum and Guptill took advantage of the powerplay and hit some lusty blows. Nicol and McCullum shared 62 for the 2nd wicket before Narine got rid of both of them. Ross Taylor was unlucky to be stumped on 28 as the ball deflected onto the stumps off Thomas' pads. New Zealand then slumped to 140/6 in the 35th over.
It required a sensible piece of batting from Ellis and Williamson to bring New Zealand back in the match as the duo scored runs efficiently in the powerplay. The match was down to the last 5 overs with New Zealand needing 35 runs in 30 balls with 4 wickets in hand. But Sunil Narine was simply splendid in the death overs as he took 3 wickets in the final overs and West Indies won the match by 20 runs.
