The 2nd Test Match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan ended in a tame draw as rain played spoilsport on most occasions in the five days. Pakistan certainly put on a better show in this test match than they did in the previous one. But the rain Gods had other ideas as the match ended in a draw. Sri Lanka still lead the 3 Test Series 1-0 with the 3rd and Final Test to be played from 8-12 July.
Pakistan had won the toss and were batting first on the flat Colombo wicket. Taufeeq Umar and Md. Hafeez provided a superb start to the innings, sharing a 78 run stand. Taufeeq was out after scoring a brisk 65 in 78 balls. Hafeez carried on the good work at the other end along with Azhar Ali. The two put on a record partnership of 287 runs for the second wicket. Hafeez was unfortunate to miss out on a Double Century as he was clean bowled by Herath for 196. Azhar Ali scored 157. Younis Khan and Captain Misbah ul Haq also contributed with the bat, scoring 32 and 66* respectively to take the Pakistan score past 500. Pakistan finally declared the innings at 551/6. Herath was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as he took 3 wickets.
Sri Lanka had a huge score in front of them, but got off to a poor start as Paranavitana was out for 0. Dilshan and Sangakkara took the innings forward as they put on 225 runs for the 2nd wicket. Dilshan was out after scoring 121. Pakistan suddenly brought a twist in the game after Sri Lanka slumped from 236/1 to 278/5 late on Day 4. But Sangakkara and Mathews(47) ensured that there was no miracle on the 5th Day morning as they put on 92 vital runs for the 6th wicket and also saved the follow on. Once again Sangakkara missed the 200 mark as he was out for 192. Sri Lanka were all out for 391 in the first innings, handing a 160 run lead to Pakistan. Junaid Khan took 5/73 and Abdur Rehman 4/78 for Pakistan.
There was not much left in the match when the second innings started as only 56 overs of play was left on Day 5. Pakistan batted for just 18 overs in the 2nd innings and reached 100/2. Sri Lanka now had a target of 261 to chase in 36 overs and it was highly unlikely that any team could win the match. Sri Lanka ended on 86/2 in 22 overs. Both the Captains decided to call it a day and the match ended in a draw. Junaid Khan was adjudged the Man of the Match for his 5 wicket haul in the 1st innings.
